Oh yes it is!
Life is too short for Pantomime. I appreciate the effort that goes into it, and the enjoyment it gives to the cast and crew, but for me it's just a bad joke retold.
Whitelight Theatre Group is a well organised, skilled group of volunteers who do an excellent job in summer theatre and have been well received in competition during their thirteen year history. Unfortunately they also do a pantomime each year, which undoubtedly pulls in the crowds, and gives plenty of opportunity for the local girls to show off their dancing legs.
But it's really not my thing. I enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan, which is equally nonsense, but there's something too slapstick about pantomime. If it were a restaurant, it would be the greasy spoon on the promenade that wasn't any good last year but which is too handy to avoid.
Good staging, thanks to the local artists and carpenters; good lighting and sound on a very limited budget; excellent costumes, this year as ever; reasonable acting and passable singing.
For the amount of time available to these volunteers, they do an excellent job. Most importantly they provide a positive example and focus for the community, which many similar towns are crying out for.
Let's just say, I'm glad it's behind me!
